Following our earlier report that Resident Evil 5 is coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, we have now had official confirmation in the form of a Capcom press release. The release confirmed that Resident Evil 5 is currently only in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, snubbing the Nintendo Revolution. This will come as a major disappointment to Nintendo fans, given the popularity and critical success of Resident Evil 4, which debuted on the GameCube.
The press release went on to say how the power of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will revolutionise the series by “delivering an unbelievable level of detail, realism and control.” More details have emerged from the Japanese magazine Famitsu, which features an interview with the game’s producer, Jun Takeuchi. From the interview we can gather that Resident Evil 5 will at least be partly set in a hot urban desert environment.
Takeuchi commented that the setting for Resident Evil 5 was inspired by watching the movie Black Hawk Down, and hopes to bring a level of “madness” to the game. Takeuchi also hinted that the main character in the sequel will be Chris Redfield from Resident Evil 1, with the tantalising prospect of a conclusion to the series’ storyline. Fans of Resident Evil 4 will be pleased to hear that the next-gen sequel is likely to have the same style control and gameplay.
So far no release date has been announced, but Takeuchi explained how next-gen games will take anything from three to five years to develop, so don’t expect anything too soon. He did, however, joke that the game would be out before the release of the PlayStation 4. The trailer from which the images in Famitsu were taken may be shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.
