Relic Entertainment’s Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Enhanced Edition is a fantastic return to one of the best RTS games ever made, bringing improved graphics, unit pathfinding and enhanced mod support.

While there are some murky upscaled textures that spoil the experience, as well as a few noticeable bugs, the remaster’s new lighting effects and massive performance improvements offer a great way to re-experience the game and its brilliant expansions. But what’s next?

Could Dawn of War 2 get an Enhanced Edition?

Speaking to VideoGamer prior to the release of the new remaster for our Making Of article, Relic Entertainment teased that a remaster of the second Dawn of War game could be possible depending on the sales of this latest release.

When asked if Dawn of War 2 – Enhanced Edition was a possibility, design director Phillipe Boulle (who worked on the original RTS games) teased there’s “only one way to find out”.

So far, Dawn of War – Enhanced Edition has already sold over 150,000 copies in just 24 hours. With major discounts for owners of the original, adoption has been quite high, but it’s too early to know just how successful the remaster will end up being.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 is a very different form of RTS from the first game. Instead of the traditional RTS formula, the second title is more like Relic’s Company of Heroes series. It’s still fantastic, but very different, and it’s definitely not like Dawn of War 3.

While some fans like both Dawn of War games (and a handful probably enjoy the third one), the second game’s massive gameplay changes aren’t beloved by everyone. Dawn of War 2 is a great game, and it’s one that could actually be remastered quite well, but it is a very different game from its predecessor.

Hopefully, the often-maligned RTS game will get its own shot in the spotlight, especially considering how popular Warhammer 40,000 is in the wake of Space Marine 2. As someone who’s always enjoyed the second game in the series – it’s essentially 40K Company of Heroes, which is cool – it definitely deserves a second chance at life.
