Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has confirmed Unreal Engine 4, the follow-up to the tech behind Gears of War 2 and countless current-generation releases, is “still a long ways off”, perhaps even beyond the next round of home video game consoles.

“Unreal Engine 4 is designed for the day we get massively multi-core processors,” Rein told Kotaku at the DICE gaming summit.

Although he declined to be any more specific in regard to “massively multi-core”, he did add that it may be the case that the next generation of consoles don’t meet the criteria.
