The world of illegal game downloads doesn’t always damage a game’s sales. That’s the view of RedLynx CEO Tero Virtala, who has revealed the independent developer actively used torrents to promote its Trials game.

“Piracy is here, so how can we take advantage of that? What we did actually, on day one, we put that game immediately on all the torrent networks ourselves,” Virtala said at the Develop Liverpool conference.

The version put on the torrent networks did not include leaderboard support, which according to Virtala meant the game functioned as a demo that encouraged downloaders to pick up the full game.
