Downloadable action title, Red Faction: Battlegrounds, will launch on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PSN during the first week of April, THQ has confirmed to Eurogamer.

No firm dates were revealed, but based on typical release patterns we should see the XBLA version hitting Xbox LIVE on April 5, with the PSN version following a day later.

In Battlegrounds players will jump into their favourite tank or mech, using Gauss Cannons, Rocket Launchers and Singularity Bombs to destroy the competition, and environment along with it.

Expect a host of multiplayer game modes and single-player challenges, with progression through the game unlocking content in full-blown retail sequel Red Faction: Armageddon.

Unlike some downloadable titles designed to form part of the marketing push for the major release – we’re looking at you Dead Space: Ignition – Battlegrounds actually looks like it might be a blast.
