As outlined in a post on Rockstar Newswire, the next update to rooting-tooting-cowboy-shooting Red Dead Online will introduce specialist roles, along with a herd of quality of life additions.

The first of these three Roles is the Bounty Hunter. They will complete contracts for rewards, carrying out their work honorably or dishonorably, and bounties can be placed on nearby players who have tangled on the wrong side of the law. Rewards include a reinforced lasso for slippery fish, cool gun-spinning tricks, and the ability to use Eagle-Eye while sprinting or on horseback.  This will probably become the most popular choice, given Red Dead Online players’ propensity for shooting first and saying ‘Howdy’ later.

The Bounty Hunter may live life from target-to-target, but the Trader will take root as a burgeoning economic force in the Wild West. From their camp, the Trader will collect materials from the environment, hunting, skinning and producing high value and high demand trappings for sale. Progressing as a Trader will allow players to upgrade the home base with a Weapons Locker, Stew Pot and a pet dog to keep you — and more importantly your goods — safe and sound.

The Collector treads the path less travelled. Chat with an occultist to receive treasure hunts and ancient clues to rare and precious items to form collector’s sets or flog them on the market individually. As Collectors improve at… collecting… tools such as the Refined Binoculars, a Horse Lantern and a Metal Detector will become available, taking you to the furthest corners of the map (and my god, the map is huge. Godspeed).

Players won’t be locked in to either of the three Roles, and can progress in each specialist track simultaneously. Along with these, Rockstar has planned out new content and improvements for Red Dead Online. Character appearances will be modifiable in the update, and as well as that, there will be a more responsive combat and movement system. Lootable items in the world will increase in frequency and the game will now remember the player’s preferred Offensive or Defensive playstyle.

There’s no given date for when the update will roll out, but more information on the Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector and these gameplay changes will arrive in the coming weeks.
