Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner has revealed a fan letter that John Romero sent him as a teenager.

The Doom co-creator was just 17 when he wrote to Mechner in 1985, having enjoyed the latter’s work on Karateka.

“I was absolutely stunned by the graphic, shadows and all,” he wrote. “You did a tremendous job and have, I think, defined the state-of-the-art for all future Apple games.”

In the latter half of the letter, Romero confesses that he’s also a developer.

“Now I must betray myself. I, too, am a game programmer, albeit an unknown one,” he says, followed by a series of questions about how Mechner achieved the game’s animation.

Karateka was one of the first video games to ever portray martial arts. Mechner is now working on a remake for PSN and Xbox LIVE.
