Sea of Thieves will enter its closed beta later this month on PC and Xbox One, developer Rare has announced. The taster for the hotly anticipated plunder-’em-up will launch on January 24 at 12pm GMT and will remain open until 8am GMT on January 29.

Rather than being a sample of the full game, the closed beta will instead offer a tailored experience that allows players to enjoy a ‘true taste of the pirate life.’ Not much else is known at this stage, but gaining access is thankfully pretty simple.

If you’ve pre-ordered the digital copy of Sea of Thieves from the Xbox Store, then the beta will show up automatically in your games library a day before it kicks off. Those of you who plumped for a physical copy at retail will need to redeem a code from the Black Dog cosmetic pack; the beta will then appear in your games library, although regardless of your preffered medium you will have to download and install the client to participate.

Sea of Thieves will be setting sail for PC and Xbox One on March 20. The game takes the form of a cooperative adventure, where players cruise the high seas while forming their own pirate crew in an attempt to increase their notoriety among the game’s various trading companies.
