Sam Raimi has committed to directing Disney’s new family tentpole Oz: The Great and the Powerful, which Disney hopes can repeat the success of the billion-dollar grossing Alice in Wonderland.

Deadline reports that Raimi will now direct Oz ahead of the Warcraft movie, with production set to begin in early 2011.

Back in July 2009 Raimi was announced as the director of the highly anticipated Warcraft movie.

“At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story,” said Raimi. “I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen.”

Raimi’s decision to put Oz ahead of Warcraft could leave Legendary Pictures with a bit of headache: look elsewhere, or at the least delay production on the project quite considerably. His ability to deliver blockbuster level motion pictures, plus his cult following borne of earlier work with the Evil Dead films gives him universal appeal and will therefore be difficult to replace.
