PlayerUnkown's Battlegrounds went live with a new PC patch recently, as it often does, and from the patch notes, which detail some bug fixes and a new crate being added, you wouldn't think Patch 13 changed anything major. But you'd be wrong.

Soon after the patch went live players began reporting that the sound of gunfire was different post-patch, and it turns out this was an intentional change in the patch that the developer had just… forgotten to mention? Left out?

Either way, PUBG Corporation has now apologised for not explaining the change, and further clarified what the change does, in a new post on Steam.

'First things first: We should have explained the change in the patch notes. We messed up here, and we hope you’ll accept our apology,' says the post, before going into more detail on the update.

'First, the primary audio changes have to do with the sounds other players’ gunshots make. The difference is due to some newly implemented functions of the HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) plugin.'

Previously PUBG players would know if a shot was coming from their left or right side, but not if it was in front or behind, or above or below. The new implementation changes that, so players will have to learn the sounds but the plan is that over time this will make enemy detection more effective. The team are keeping tabs on feedback, and will keep making updates to the sound system. There are some handy comparative videos to check out as well.
