The latest Japanese video game sales figures released by Media Create show something we’re not used to seeing – a Nintendo platform doesn’t top the weekly hardware chart.

For the week ending September 16 it isn’t the Wii or the Nintendo DS which lead the pack, but Sony’s PSP with 95,487 units sold. The Nintendo DS takes second place with 79,974 units and the Wii a distant third with 26,181 units.

Much of the PSP’s newly found dominance can be placed firmly on the back on Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII which moved an astonishing 487,000 units during its first week on sale and was available in a limited edition Crisis Core edition PSP console bundle.

Lagging in fourth and fifth places are the PS2 and PS3 respectively, each moving 13,000 units over the week. The Xbox 360 continues to struggle along with 1,243 units and is followed by the GBA (836 units) and the Nintendo GameCube (97 units).
