Nintendo had previously held the record for the fastest selling console in the UK, with the DS selling 87,000 units in its first week back in March, but the PSP has sold more than twice that amount. The massive sales of the PSP are made more impressive by the retail price of £179.99 that Sony gave its pocket dynamo, a price some £80 more expensive than the DS which launched at £99.99. However, these figures aren’t exactly black and white as the DS was launched on a Friday and the PSP was released on a Thursday, giving it an extra day of sales. Even so, the PSP’s figures are impressive, just not as outright devastating as they initially seem.

It was also a successful day for PSP software sales with nine of the UK’s top ten places filled by PSP titles. Only four of the 24 launch titles failed to make the top 40. We’ll have a full chart rundown later, but the top seller was Ridge Racer, followed by Wipeout Pure, Virtua Tennis and Metal Gear Acid. You have to wonder if the games buying public knew what kind of game they were getting in Metal Gear Acid. A card battler probably isn’t what a lot of people expected.

In all this was a great day for Sony and UK retailers who got a much needed boost after the summer drought. Hardware sales grossed £33.3 million, with software sales said to take the total figure over £50 million.
