A new report claims that manufacturing for the PS6 is planned for early-to-mid 2027, and that the console will be less powerful but cheaper than the next Xbox. Talk about the PS6 has been heating up with Sony earlier this year admitting that the next-gen console is already “top of mind”. While there are still many fantastic games to come out on the PS5 such as GTA 6 and Marvel’s Wolverine, it does feel as though the PS5’s lifecycle as Sony’s newest system is coming to an end.
PS6 will be cheaper but less powerful than next Xbox
As relayed by Videogameschronicle, YouTuber and PS5 Pro leaker, Moore’s Law Is Dead, claims that the PS6 will be cheaper but less powerful than the next Xbox console. There has been rumors that Microsoft is abandoning consoles to become fully third-party, but this has been debunked by Microsoft themselves.
According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, the next Xbox will use the AMD Magnus APU, which is an APU that combines a CPU and GPU on a single chip. It will be the largest ever used in a games console, and it will reportedly be 46% larger than the one planned for the PS6. Because of this, the next Xbox will boast more power, but with the drawback of being more expensive.
In addition to being more powerful, the YouTuber suggested that the next Xbox will be faster than the PS6. However, Moore’s Law Is Dead doesn’t believe the next Xbox “will be more than about a third faster”.
As for how much the next Xbox will cost, Moore’s Law Is Dead predicted it will probably fall between $800 and $1,200. No prediction was shared for the price of the PS6, but there is the expectation that it will be cheaper.
PS6 manufacturing planned for 2027
In another video as reported by The Gamer, Moore’s Law Is Dead claims that manufacturing for the PS6 will happen in 2027. According to Moore’s Law, at the 57:10 mark, they claim to “have a literal document showing when they manufacture these and it is in middle or even early 2027, and that’s exactly when they manufacture the PS6”.
Assuming the console does manufacture in early or middle 2027, this would be put the console on course for a fall 2027 release, as also claimed by a reputable AMD leaker provided there’s no “unexpected delays”. The PS5 was manufactured in August 2020 before being sold in November, so it’s possible history could repeat itself in just a couple of years.
In a new video with AMD, Sony’s Mark Cerny suggested that PlayStation’s next console is a “few years” away. While many interpreted this as literally pointing to 2028, a “few years” is loose phrasing even though it literally means three.
Typically, Sony release a new console almost every seven years. Looking at North America and Europe, the PS1 was out in 1995 followed by the PS2 in 2000. We were then treated to the PS3 in 2007, and then the PS4 in 2013 followed by the PS5 in 2020. If the PS6 were to come out in 2028, it would cement the PS5 as Sony’s longest serving new console.
In addition to further suggesting Sony’s next-gen console will come out in 2027, Moore’s Law Is Dead has previously leaked alleged specs for the PS6 console and its handheld companion.
