PlayStation 4’s line-up of launch titles will be “stronger than any prior PlayStation hardware”, Sony has said.

Talking to Gamasutra about the PS4’s hardware capabilities, system architect Mark Cerny said that, though he couldn’t reveal the amount of titles that will be available when the console goes on sale this autumn, the “familiarity” of the hardware and the ability for developers to port game engines from PC to PS4 within “weeks, not months” will result in stronger software available at launch.

“There are many, many ways to control how the resources within the GPU are allocated between graphics and compute,” said Cerny. “Of course, what you can do, and what most launch titles will do, is allocate all of the resources to graphics. And that’s perfectly fine, that’s great. It’s just that the vision is that by the middle of the console lifecycle, that there’s a bit more going on with compute.”

Sony has already announced multiple titles expected to be available at PS4’s launch, including FPS Killzone: Shadow Fall, sandbox action-adventure inFamous: Second Son and driving simulator DriveClub.

Third-party titles including Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag are also expected to be available at the console’s launch.

An exact release date for PS4 has yet to be announced by Sony, but the firm suggested last week that it had already set an internal target date.
