Over 1 million PlayStation 4s were sold within the first 24 hours of the console’s North American launch, Sony has announced.

The sales number is a new record for the platform holder, with the hardware reported to have sold faster than all previous PlayStation consoles.

It also puts Sony in good stead to hit its initial sales targets for the console. Sony announced in August that PlayStation 4 had received over 1 million pre-orders, and later said that it hoped to sell 5 million consoles before April 2014.

“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal,” said Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

PlayStation 4 went on sale in North America on Friday and launches across PAL territories on November 29. It’s due to go on sale in Japan in early 2014.
