PlayStation 4 had originally been designed to feature just 4GB RAM, SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has revealed.
Speaking to GameSpot, Yoshida said that upgrading to 8GB RAM was a “business decision” after speaking with developers who recommended the boost in memory.
“And because we chose expensive memory…we really liked the performance, but it’s pricy [sic], right? So going to 8GB was a bit of a business decision,” Yoshida said. “But we were able to make that decision because of a lot of the feedback from developers.”
It has long been rumoured that PS4 was only expected to include 4GB of RAM.
Back in April, Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray told VideoGamer.com that PS4 was “originally” only expected to include 4GB, with the 8GB announcement coming as a surprise during the PS4’s reveal back in February.
Killzone: Shadow Fall’s debut gameplay demo only used 4GB of memory, too.
Both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One include 8GB RAM, although PS4 features faster GDDR5 hardware over Xbox One’s DDR3.
PlayStation 4 launches in the UK on November 29.
