Sony announced during its latest earnings call (via GamSpot) that PlayStation 4 has now sold 96.8 million units worldwide since its launch in 2013, with 17.8 million alone shipped during the financial year ended March 31.

In addition, the hardware giant briefly mentioned PlayStation 5 again in the report, saying that its gaming sector recorded an ‘increase in development expensed for the next generation console.’

Sony spoke about its new home console for the first time during an interview with Wired just the other week, where it confirmed the system would be backwards compatible with PS4.

Speaking of PS5, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier has claimed that Sony decided to announce the console in this way as it wanted to avoid leaks, having just distributed devkits to a number of third-party developers.

Elsewhere in the earnings call, Sony confirmed that PlayStation Plus now has 36.4 million paying subscribers worldwide.
