Sony is to announce a PS3 price cut at gamescom in August, MCV understands.
The annual European trade and consumer video games event is expected to be the platform for Sony to reveal a new £199.99 recommended retail price, with retailers prepared to aggressively discount the console down as low as £179.99.
Such a price cut might instigate a drop by Microsoft, either on its Xbox 360 console or by offering value-based Kinect console bundles.
Sony and Microsoft have given no comment.
Analyst Nick Parker told MCV: “£199.99 makes sense as it keeps Sony’s options open for another drop, but they could be more aggressive.
“Microsoft wants to be No.1 but I expect it is adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach with possible new value-added deals on Kinect.”
The 160GB Slim PS3 currently carries a retail price of £249.99, and has been readily reduced in price to around the £200 mark. A RRP cut of around £50 would certainly allow prices in the region of £179.99 or better value when bundling games.
