Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the highly anticipated PlayStation 3 system software update 2.40 is to be released on Wednesday, July 2.
Firmware 2.40 will introduce a host of new functionality, although the main attention is on the in-game XMB and the new Trophy reward system. In-game XMB will enable players to access the PS3 menu at any time while playing “most games” with a simple press of the PlayStation Button on the controller. From here players will be able to check to see which friends are online, read and send messages, and change game settings all without having to quit the game.
Additionally the Friends list capacity has been extended from 50 to 100 people.
Firmware 2.40 will also introduce the Trophy system which will reward players with virtual trophies for their achievements in online gaming. Head elsewhere on the site for more info on trophies and a list of the first supported titles.
