PlayStation 3 has been discontinued in New Zealand, Sony has confirmed.
The announcement means that the last-gen console will no longer be available to buy in the country once current stock has depleted, with Sony having no plans to replenish stock in the future.
“SCENZ will not be shipping anymore PlayStation 3 consoles to its retailers,” the company confirmed in a statement to New Zealand website ThoseGamers, “however the platform is still available in retail outlets throughout NZ and being supported with peripherals, great new releases and back catalogue software.”
Sony has yet to announce plans to discontinue the console in other parts of the world.
PS3 made its debut in the US and Japan in November 2006 before arriving in the European and Australian markets in March 2007. The console went through two major hardware revisions throughout its lifecycle, later launching in a slim and super slim model, and had sold over 80 million units by the time PS4 launched in November 2013.
Rumours of the console’s discontinuation in the country first emerged last night after New Zealand retailer Mighty Ape Games revealed on its Facebook page that Sony had informed it that the “PS3 is officially discontinued for NZ”. The post has since been removed, but a screengrab can be seen in the image below.
The latest PS4 sales, meanwhile, currently stand at over 25 million.
