Sony Computer Entertainment shipped 14.3 million PlayStation 3 consoles worldwide in the year ended March 31, 2011.

The figure represents a year-on-year increase of 1.3 million, but falls some 700,000 units short of the 15 million units forecast by the platform holder. Sony is once again predicting 15 million PS3 units in financial year 2011.

It’s also worth pointing out that fourth quarter PS3 sales came in at 2.1 million, down from 2.2 million in Q4 fiscal 2009. In fact, it’s the second quarter in succession which saw a sales decline: Q3 FY10 managed only 6.3 million units compared to 6.5 in Q3 FY09.

PS3 software clocked in at 147.9 million units for the year, a big increase from 115.6 million units in FY09.

PSP sales fell to eight million units for the year, down from 9.9 in FY09, while the PS2 shipped a further 6.4 million units.

Sony’s Networked Products and Services division – home of the PlayStation business – recorded an operating profit of YEN 35.6 billion (approximately £267 million) for the year ended March 31, 2011. This is a stark improvement over the YEN 83.3 billion loss reported in FY09.
