Sales of PlayStation Vita had reached 1.8 million worldwide as of March 31, 2012, Sony revealed during today’s earnings call.
PlayStation Vita launched in December in Japan, followed in February in Europe and the US.
“About Vita,” said Sony CEO Kaz Hirai (via translator), “the last year, [we sold] 1.8 million units for US, Japan, Asia and Europe. And as a starting phase, I think it was a good start.”
Sony had declined to release the sales figures in its earlier financial report.
Given 1.2 million PS Vitas were sold worldwide as of the end of February 2012, this means a further 600,000 units were shifted in March.
600,000 units a month or 1.8 million a quarter isn’t too far behind the two million units the 3DS managed to sell from January to March.
Sony said it expects to sell 16 million units of PSP and PS Vita this financial year (ends March 31, 2013), with six million of these attributed to the PSP. This means 10 million Vita sales are expected.
This 10 million figure doesn’t fit in with the current 600,000 units a month – which has likely declined considerably – but the handheld will have the holiday season sales to boost its sales trajectory.
Hirai also stressed the importance of strong software for PS Vita.
“A game platform, like Vita – the software is the key to success, how good the software is,” he said. “We have to reinforce the software area in order to improve the business, that is the basic line.”
