Following Internet reports that some lucky gamers have managed to purchase Xbox 360 FPS Halo 3, perhaps the most hotly anticipated game ever, through UK high-street retailer Argos, we thought we’d give it a try ourselves, and lo and behold, it worked, and we’ve managed to get our hands on the game a full week before release date.

It seems an administration error on Argos’ website this morning allowed a reservation for the game, which is expected to sell millions of copies when it is released on 26 September in the UK, and gave us a pick up date of between today, 19 September, and tomorrow, 20 September. Clearly, retailers already have Halo 3 in stock now right now.

Microsoft has cleared up rumours that playing the game online before it is officially released will get your account banned. This is not the case, with Microsoft confirming to Pro-G that consumers will not be punished for buying and playing the game prior to the official September 26 release date.

Gamers eager to get the game now from Argos might be out of luck though, as it appears the retailer has wised up to its mistake. When attempting to reserve the game for in-store pick-up users are now told it will be ready for collection from Monday, September 24, still a full two days before the official release date.

Until then, we’re off to bust Halo 3 wide open. Time to finish the fight.

Update: Argos has issued a statement in response to news that certain stores across the country sold copies of Halo 3 earlier today.

Argos would like to make it clear that it does not endorse breaking street dates and continues to be committed to preventing pre-release sales through its stores and web site,” reads the statement.

However, we are aware that a genuine administrative error has resulted in a small number of cases where Halo 3 has already been sold. We are currently ensuring that there are no further sales of this product in-store until the official release date, Wednesday 26 September.
