Princess Peach is not a playable character in New Super Mario Bros. U because she is too unique to be kitted out with a generic move set, game director Masataka Takemoto has told gamesTM.

The Wii U launch game features Mario, Luigi and Toad, but Princess Peach is nowhere to be seen.

“In Super Mario Bros 2, Princess Peach had her own unique moves and animation,” Takemoto explained. “In this series, we want all the players to have the same moves and animations as Mario, and Princess Peach isn’t suited for that.”

New Super Mario Bros. U will be released on Friday, November 30 alongside the Wii U.

Peach fans would likely have settled for her inclusion with generic moves, but it seems Takemoto would not have been happy for this to happen.
