The PlayStation launched in Japan in December 1994 and now in 2006 the PlayStation brand is one of the strongest in the world. It was probably with some sadness, then, that Sony announced that the original PlayStation is no longer in production.

However, it’s unlikely that anyone wanting a PlayStation will be left disappointed, with stock still available in many countries around the world and the second-hand market unlikely to die any time soon. Then there’s the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, which can both play original PlayStation titles. The PSP will also get in on the action to some extent, with a PlayStation emulator in the works allowing select titles to be played on the handheld.
Sony is obviously hoping that the PlayStation 2 has an equally lengthy run.
