Scheduled for a summer release, the PlayStation Eye camera looks set to build on the popularity of the EyeToy, offering a host of new and enhanced functionality, and for the first time enabling PlayStation users to create and share their own videos.

Designed specifically for the PS3, the camera features a microphone with the ability to reduce background noise and focus on the spoken word for smoother, more accurate speech recognition.

The new camera will also enable users to capture videos and audio clips directly to the PS3’s hard drive. Users will have a range of different capturing modes including slo-mo (120 framer per second) and time-lapse. The camera comes bundled with Eye Create, editing software which enables users to cut together video and audio clips and share them with friends. Videos can be shot in 640×480 at 60fps or at half that res at up to 120fps.

Performance has also been improved with low-light conditions now less of an issue and a faster frame-rate will allow improved tracking, responsiveness and smoothness.

PlayStation Eye is a great example of how we have moved forward so significantly with our technology. PLAYSTATION Eye has four times the resolution, twice the framerate and double the sensitivity of its predecessor EyeToy USB Camera. With the technology that we now have at our disposal we will be able to dramatically improve the communications experience enjoyed on PS3,” said David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

No firm release date has been announced just yet, but look out for the PlayStation Eye in the summer.
