PlayStation 4’s 2015 first-party lineup “was not as strong” as the company would have liked, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia’s managing director has admitted.

Next year’s, however, promises to be “incredible”, Michael Ephraim says, highlighting The Last Guardian, No Man’s Sky and Uncharted 4 as three of the best games coming in 2016.

“Games that have been released this year, from Destiny [The Taken King], Call of Duty, Star Wars — most of them we have a collaboration with for additional content if you play on PlayStation 4, so we’re pretty confident with the way Christmas is going,” Ephraim said in an interview with GameSpot. “The demand is strong.”

“We have worked very closely with third parties this year because our first party lineup was not as a strong as we would have liked.”

He continued:  “Next year, our first party lineup looks incredible. You’ve got Street Fighter, Uncharted 4, No Man’s Sky, The Last Guardian, Gran Turismo. These are all exclusives, and two of them are new franchises.”

Ephraim’s comments follow those from Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House earlier in the year, who admitted that PS4’s “first-party line-up is a little sparse this year”.

Sony has been criticised by some for failing to provide a substantial line-up of first-party titles in time for the holidays, instead relying on third-party support, summer release Until Dawn and remastered compilation Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End had previously been due to arrive this year, but was pushed back to March to give Naughty Dog more time to meet the “high standards that gamers have come to expect”.

It doesn’t appear to have damaged sales too much, however, with the console having soared past 30m units last month.

Microsoft, meanwhile, has launched what it calls “the greatest games lineup in Xbox history” on Xbox One, with games including Forza Motorsport 6, Halo 5, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Next year it also plans to launch Scalebound, Crackdown 3, Halo Wars 2, Quantum Break and more.
