Since the release of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, Sony has not only raised the price of its current-gen console numerous times, but also the price of its PS Plus subscription service. The online gaming subscription has massively increased in price across all tiers, and Sony is planning to keep adjusting its price to increase profit.
Speaking during a recent business meeting, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino confirmed that more price adjustments are coming for the PlayStation Plus service as Sony continues to “maximise profitability”.
PS Plus prices will be adjusted again
While Nishino didn’t necessarily state that prices will be increasing again, the Sony CEO explained that price increases for PS Plus have not deterred players from continuing to subscribe. In fact, despite the higher prices, more players are choosing the more expensive tiers of PS Plus than ever before.
“Subscribers are increasingly choosing our Premium and Extra tiers, which now represent approximately 38% of total subscribers,” Nishino explained (via VGC).
The SIE CEO explained that “PlayStation Plus is highly valued” by players on PS4 and PS5 hardware, and the percentage of players on PS Plus Premium and Extra is steadily increasing despite price hikes.
“This is even after the global price increases we implemented in FY2023, and more recently, the local price increases in selected countries, to improve our pricing strategy across certain market clusters, and also to account for [foreign exchange] movements,” Nishino explained.
The Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO stated that price increases were “partly a result of increasing value” and allowed the company to invest in more feature “such as player personalisation and enhanced content discovery”. However, there will be more price adjustments and potentially more benefits in the coming years.
“The PlayStation Plus service offers great value for our players,” the CEO said. “And we will continue to add more value and adjust our pricing strategy in a dynamic way to maximise profitability.”
The price of PS Plus has increased massively in the past few years with an annual premium subscription costing 35% more than it did in 2023. With PC players having access to multiplayer—although not the service’s additional benefits—for free, the rising price does feel like a slap in the face for console users.
In the last few months, PlayStation has continued to raise prices in individual regions with waves of price increases across the world, and it would appear that more PS Plus price increases are on the way.
