It looks like you’ll finally be able to expand your PlayStation 5’s storage with an internal SSD in the very near future.
A new PlayStation support page has been published, detailing instructions of how to add an M.2 SSD into the console’s expansion slot. Though the feature is not live yet, the instructions state that it will be part of an upcoming beta update to the console.
As well as beta access, the company recommends you’ll need a well lit room, a Phillips or cross-head screwdriver and a small flashlight. You won’t be able to use just any SSD either, but one that uses a specific PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD” interface with at least 250GB. M.2 SATA SSDs also are not supported. The company also warns that the specifications may change between beta and release.
Some manufactures have begun announcing PlayStation 5 compatible SSDs, beginning with Seagate’s FireCuda 530. Country Manager Jeff Park told Finder.com.au: “We have done some testing with Sony on the PlayStation 5 and today we can confirm that the FireCuda 530 with the heatsink has met all the PS5 requirements.”
