PlayStation 5’s next system update adds Discord Voice Chat support and more

PlayStation has announced its next system software update for the PlayStation 5 is now available to those on the beta testing program – and will be coming to everyone else ‘soon’.

It’s a pretty significant update, with a number of much-requested new features for the console. Highlights include native Discord support, allowing players to join a Discord voice chat through the console.

As revealed on the PlayStation Blog, these changes will start rolling out today for beta participants in the UK, US, Canada, Japan, Germany and France – with users from those countries getting an email if they’re in.

Some features may not make it into the final version – but here’s a quick rundown of what’s in this beta.

New Social Features

  • Join a Discord Voice Chat on PlayStation 5 consoles
  • Start or Request Share Screen from a Friend’s Profile
  • New ‘Join Game’ icon in Party Chats
  • New ‘Friends Who Play’ tile
  • Manually Upload Game Captures to PlayStation App

New Gameplay and Personalization Options

  • Variable Refresh Rate Support for 1440p
  • Game Library Enhancements
    • Sort and Filter games by type, including VR titles
  • Game Presets for Multiplayer Session Preferences

New Accessibility and Ease-of-Use Features

  • PS4 to PS5 Saved Data Migration
  • PS5 to PS5 Data Transfer
  • Screen Reader Improvements
  • Wireless Device Update for DualSense Wireless Controller
  • Game Capture Using Voice Command (US and UK limited release)

Many of these changes will be very welcomed by players, especially streamlining the process of migrating your PS4 saves from the Cloud to PlayStation 5.

The Discord support also comes about a year after PlayStation integration was first introduced on a basic level -but this just allowed Discord users to show what they were playing on PS5.

Similarly, Xbox got a similar update, enabling Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles to access Discord Voice Chat, last summer.
