Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 is the company’s fastest selling console, clocking up sales of 10 million consoles as of July 18, 2021.

As per GamesIndustry.biz, the company reached the milestone figure just a few weeks faster than the same one for the PlayStation 4. The news comes not long after Microsoft boasted of the Xbox Series X|S also being that company’s fastest selling console.

Games of course also gave Sony big numbers, with Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales shifting over 6.5 million copies since launch. Last month’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has already sold 1.1 million units worldwide, while PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal has sold 560,000 copies.

Of course, PlayStation 5 sales figures too have been dictated by the company trying to supply a massive demand for hardware. People are still unable to just pop into a shop and buy one, which perhaps makes the milestone even more impressive. CEO Jim Ryan said “Demand is still extremely strong everywhere, and the sales data for individual countries are simply a reflection of inventory allocation decisions. We’ll learn a lot more as we get further into 2021 and 2022.”

It’s also worth noting the performance of MLB The Show 21, as the first PlayStation Studios title also playable on Xbox and available on Xbox Game Pass. It does seem to have paid off though, as Ryan reveals: “It’s always interesting to experiment with new models but the core reason that MLB: The Show has done so very well is that it’s a really great game that is now the fastest-selling title in the franchise’s history.”
