During Sony’s pre-E3 conference a number of PlayStation 3 games were shown along with tech demos for the hardware. Sony showed video footage of a number of games including Devil May Cry 4, I-8 (a war based FPS from Insomniac Games), MotorStorm (an off-road racer), Warhawk (a sequel to the PlayStation aerial action game), Killing Day (an FPS from Ubisoft) and demonstrated the future of the Gran Turismo series. Of particular note was a video presentation for Killzone 2. The video had visuals almost on par with CGI movies, as did a number of other presentations. EA’s demonstration of Fight Night on the PlayStation 3 was also spectacular, with punches realistically disfiguring the faces of the fighters. The visual representation of damage was said to be so realistic that onscreen displays for health may not be needed, with gamers using the look of their fighter to determine their current state.

Many people were blown away by the presentations, but we weren’t quite so sure. Some of the footage looked too good to be true, making us believe that a lot of games on show were nothing more that pre-rendered footage. If, however, PlayStation 3 games end up looking as good as the demos, gamers will be blown away.

What was shown in real time was a demonstration of the Unreal Engine 3 running on PlayStation 3 hardware. While the Xbox 360 looks to be able to make good use of this engine as well, the demonstration was still impressive and was apparently made in less than two months. Equally impressive was early work from the team working on The Getaway 3. The short demo concentrated on a busy area of London, with a lot of people wandering the streets and double-decker busses navigating the hectic roads. The lighting in particular looked incredibly realistic.

A number of other technical demos were shown, including an appearance from the EyeToy. Using the EyeToy, glasses were moved around a bathtub and were used to pick up and throw water around. The demo was incredible impressive and shows where EyeToy technology is going when combined with the PlayStation 3. The device used was said to be the same camera that is already available for the PlayStation 2, which made the demo even more impressive.

It was hard not to be impressed by the Sony presentation. The footage they showed was truly mind blowing, but without any actual in-game footage it was hard to get a feel on what PlayStation 3 games will truly look like. There is no doubt that the console will be incredibly powerful and will have support from all the big players in the industry, but whether or not it will be a huge leap over other next generation consoles (as people are suggesting) remains to be seen.
