In Europe the PlayStation 3 has outsold the Wii and Xbox 360 by approximately one million units so far in 2011, according to data published by Nintendo.

As of week 40 (which began October 3, 2011), PS3 sales were approaching three million units, whilst Wii and Xbox 360 year-to-date figures were at the two million mark.

The story is different in the US, where the Xbox 360 rules the roost, having sold close to 3.5 million units, whilst Wii and PS3 have sold around a million units less.

European sales data was taken from independent market research companies in European countries, whilst US sales data comes direct from the NPD Group.
