Popcap Games has announced the surprise launch of Plants vs. Zombies 3 into Pre-Alpha on Android devices.

In the announcement, Popcap Games state that they're looking for people to help test the upcoming sequel to the mobile-focused Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time. In the announcement, Popcap say 'We’ve been working on PvZ for years and want to bring our beloved plants and zombies to current players and the next generation of players everywhere. We’re hard at work testing out a lot of fun things that we want your feedback on, and hope you will come on this journey with us!'

The PvZ Pre-Alpha is Android only for now, and you'll  require a phone equivalent to a Galaxy S7 or higher for specs, with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or higher as the operating system. The game is free to play, and the studio promise that there will be no microtransactions during this Pre-Alpha stage.

As it's under testing, players are warned that their progress may be wiped and indeed Popcap are keen to stress that the pre-alpha may not necessarily represent the final game on release, but intrested parties are being encouraged to sign up on the website.

There's no expected date for the full release as of yet, but it hopes to match the success of Plants vs Zombies 2 which boasted 25 million downloads two weeks after launch back in 2013.
