Plants vs Zombies 2 has been downloaded almost 25 million times, exceeding the total lifetime downloads of the 2010 original, EA has announced.

The free-to-play tower defense game launched on iOS just two weeks ago, but has already managed to storm the download charts with over 81 million hours played so far.

“Plants vs. Zombies 2 has smashed records and been downloaded nearly 25 million times by players around the globe,” EA said in an update on its website.

“It really was about time – downloads for Plants vs. Zombies 2 have exceeded total lifetime downloads for Plants vs. Zombies, the original favorite from 2010. Our fans have been loving the new sequel, with an App Store rating that has continuously hovered at 4.5/5 stars.”

Despite Plants vs Zombies 2’s success, some fans have criticised the game for its approach to in-app purchases, which asks players to purchase coins to gain access to upgrades and special plants.

It isn’t yet known whether the game will release on other platforms besides iOS.

Third-person shooter spin-off Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is due for release on Xbox One and Xbox 360 early next year.
