Nintendo Switch fans are bracing themselves for the return of the most adorable garden-dwelling aliens later this week, which naturally means the Pikmin 4 review embargo isn’t far behind.

The fourth entry in the series is almost upon us, and naturally long time series stalwarts and those new to Pikmin alike are interested to know how the new game holds up. Will it help bolster Nintendo’s incredible 2023 following Tears of the Kingdom, or at least help bridge the gap first-party fans have to wait before two Mario titles? We don’t have long to find out, as the Pikmin 4 review embargo is on Wednesday 19 July at 6am PDT / 9am EDT / 2pm BST / 3pm CEST / 11pm AEST.

In case you’re not up to speed, Pikmin 4 will see players take on the role not of the familiar Captain Olimar, but a new custom recruit of the Rescue Corps who were on a mission to save the series’ longstanding hero until they themselves crash landed on this mysterious planet. Luckily, not only do they have the seed-creatures known as Pikmin to help them out, but they also have Oatchi the Rescue Pup. They’re new for this latest entry, and can help out in a variety of ways such as smashing through barriers that the Pikmin can’t, and carrying you and the series titular creatures on his back.

In order to make the wait for the new game easier, Nintendo released remasters of the first two Pikmin games on the Switch digitally earlier this year, with a physical release for both due in September. If you really want to be caught up before Pikmin 4 arrives, there’s also Pikmin 3 Deluxe which launched on the Switch back in 2020, an enhanced port of the Wii U threequel which originally launched in 2013 followed by Hey! Pikmin on the 3DS in 2017.

Those who are keen can download a free demo of Pikmin 4 right now, with the save data transferring across to the full game when it launches on June 29, 2023.
