In an unexpected turn of events, The Initiative has announced it’ll now be working with Crystal Dynamics on the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot.

The Xbox studio’s Twitter account broke the news. It said “The teams couldn’t pass up a chance to work together. We’re still early in development, but incredibly excited to use this unique opportunity to deliver on the vision for Perfect Dark!”

Responding in kind, the Tomb Raider and Marvel’s Avengers studio added their own statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to join forces with The Initiative to bring Perfect Dark to a new generation of gamers! We thrive on reimagining epic heroes and can’t wait to realize this first person spy-thriller together.”

It’s worth noting that The Initiative is headed by none other than Darrell Gallagher, former studio head of Crystal Dynamics. In fact, several former members of the latter were snapped up by The Initiative in various rounds of hires. Both studios are located in the California area too, which no doubt also serves the new partnership well.

The Perfect Dark reboot was first formally revealed at the Game Awards last year. Details on the game are still vague, but we’re promised a more “eco sci-fi” take on the super spy. The project ran into a minor speedbump back in February when lead Drew Murray headed back to Insomniac for “personal reasons” and we’ve not heard much since. Hopefully, we’ll hear more on the game soon.

Perfect Dark is currently in development for the Xbox Series X|S.
