id Software’s Rage for the PC will ship with modding and level design tools, according to creative director Tim Willits. This will allow users to modify existing levels and create brand new ones.

“Pull down the console, type ‘id studio’, then press enter. Then, bam, there’s all the tools we use,” Willits told PC Gamer.

While the process of accessing the tools is simple, using them will be anything but.

“Building levels from scratch is more difficult, because we have a layer system in some of the levels,” said Tim. “I can foresee somebody modding up Wellspring (a town in-game) and adding different characters, giving them different voice-over.”

The level editor, while trickier to use, is “built into the engine” if you want to use it to create brand new areas.

Modding has come on a long way since the days of using QuArK to create a completely empty and pointless box room running in the Quake engine. Hopefully more skilled modders will create some great things using id’s Tech 5 engine.
