The mode might have been removed due to significant player backlash but now some Overwatch 2 players are calling for the return of the original Overwatch’s Assault/Two Control Point (2CP) mode. Previously players had complained that the mode was too one-sided but since the mode’s removal, some players have been reminiscing on their time with it.
Taking to the Overwatch Reddit, one player noted that they missed the mode saying, “Sure getting Volskaya 2-3 times in 5 games was annoying but they were fun and they were good maps, who cares if it was bad for Pro League.” However, many other players were quick to note that 2CPs removal was down to the casual community calling for it, not pro players. One player said, “Yeah it’s wild that people genuinely think 2CP was removed cause of pros when the entire community f**king hated the game mode and it was a big discussion point for years by the community.”
They continued, “I didn’t even know what pros thought of it cause of how much the community united against 2CP. There’s a reason why the announcement of no more 2CP in OW2 was treated like a new hero reveal. It was for the casuals and community.” A lot of players were quick to note the enjoyment and skill ceiling the mode offered. However as one player pointed out, “the fundamental issue with 2CP was map design, not the mode itself. If they tweaked some things, adding more paths and maybe pushing back the defenders’ 2nd spawn instead of leaving it exactly the same, it would solve all the issues people claimed to have with it.”
A lot of Overwatch 2 players are just looking for a bit more variety. User thegeeseisleese noted that they would happily take “Volskaya 2-3 times in 5 games” over the current map and game mode rotation. They said, “I’ll happily take Volskaya 2-3 times in 5 games, that’s like 12 minutes of gameplay. At least there’s action going on, it’s so much better than getting a push map in 6 out of 10 games. Last weekend my group got (in this order) Colosseo, New Queen Street, Colosseo, Busan, Esperanca, New Queen Street, Blizzard World, Busan, Colosseo, and Junkertown. It may have been one of the most boring days I’ve ever had playing anything.”
2CP certainly isn’t without its flaws but for a lot of players, they’d just like the option to change up their gameplay. Surprisingly, this is a stark departure from the community’s thoughts on the mode before Overwatch 2’s release, so it’ll be interesting to see if Blizzard takes note of this call at all.
