Outlast developer Red Barrels has revealed that the psychological horror series has scared up over 15 million copies worldwide.

Speaking with GI.biz, the studio's co-founder, Philippe Morin, revealed that the blood-drenched franchise has pulled in $64 million in revenue since its debut on PC in 2013.

What's next from the studio, then?

Initially, Morin said the team fancied doing something 'completely different' for its new project after 2017's Outlast 2. After mulling it over however, they instead found a way to fit the new game into the same universe but promised it would mark a 'departure' from the established template.

'We're prototyping, and the way I want to approach this is to get a prototype that we're really happy about, and then figure out the best way to get it done,' he said. 'Are we going to need the same kind of budget? Can it be lower? Right now, I don't know.'

So there you have it. Outlast is coming back, but probably not in the same getup you know and love. It's also unlikely to be called Outlast 3.

The original game took place in a mental asylum and saw you poking around the dimly-lit halls and rooms looking for clues while legging it from the various nasties that populated the building. Outlast 2 meanwhile took a more religious approach and was very much Hillbilly penis horror territory.

That's Red Barrels' words by the way, not ours.
