Gearbox has assured fans that Borderlands 3 “will happen” – unless asteroids hit the Earth first.

“Borderlands 3 will happen,” Battleborn executive producer Sean Reardon told Game Informer. “Well, I mean, asteroids could hit… [but] Gearbox is not leaving Borderlands behind in any sense of the word.”

It was reported earlier this month that the idea of Borderlands 3 “scared” Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, who believes it would have to be “so crazy and so big” to live up to expectation.

“If there’s going to be a Borderlands 3 and what that would be. We imagine what that might be, and frankly it scared us,” he said. “It’s like, ‘That’s so crazy and so big that I’m not sure we can succeed’.”

Nevertheless, the studio would be “very excited” to work on a new Borderlands, Reardon says.

“Everybody will be very excited. We’ll be very excited and we’ll have learned things through Battleborn and all the other games that come out between here and then. That studio will be all the better. We’ll have better ingredients, we’ll have better people. All that stuff will exist.”

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which is currently in development at 2K Australia, launches this October on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Gearbox’s next project, Battleborn, launches next year.
