It has today been confirmed by Square Enix that Vanillaware’s Odin Sphere, a visually stunning 2D action RPG is to be released across PAL territories early in 2008 for PlayStation 2.

The game is inspired by the renaissance of hand-drawn artwork and is set in a fantasy world in which five individual tales combine to tell an epic story of power, loss and love.

The country of Valentine is obliterated by the power of an ancient artefact and sparks a war between the fairies of Ringford and the warriors of Ragnanival. Unknown to them they are acting out a forgotten prophecy that will lead to the destruction of the entire world. Players will take control of the warrior princess Gwendolyn, daughter of Odin, and must uncover the truth behind the prophecy and prevent it from being fulfilled.

We’re told the PAL release will be fully optimised for the PAL system, featuring both a 60Hz display mode and an optimised 50Hz mode for those with TVs unable to display a 60Hz image. All In-game text will also be fully localised into English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

With the PlayStation 2 getting fewer and fewer must have titles Odin Sphere could be one to look out for next year.
