The NPD Group has revealed New Super Mario Bros. Wii from Nintendo as the best-selling video game in the US during December. The follow-up to the acclaimed DS platformer sold a massive 2.82 million units between November 29, 2009 and January 2, 2010. The game also became the third best-selling title of 2009.

Behind New Super Mario Bros. Wii came Nintendo’s own Wii Fit Plus (2.41 million) and Wii Sports Resort (1.79 million). Then came the Call of Duty games, Modern Warfare 2 selling 1.63 million copies on Xbox 360 and 1.12 million on PS3.

Wii Play was also a million seller, shifting 1.01 million over the month. Mario Kart Wii sold 936,100 units, Assassin’s Creed II (Xbox 360) 783,100 units, Left 4 Dead 2 (Xbox 360) 728,500 units and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story 656,700 units.

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the fourth best-selling game of all time. In fact, 3 of the top 10 games of all time are Call of Duty games,” commented the NPD Group’s Anita Frazier.
