The imminent EA Partners release of Crysis 2 won’t feature the publisher’s Online Pass, after developer Crytek turned down the option to use it.
Typically with Online Pass a code found in the game box must be used to activate access to online play and additional content via DLC. Epic Games’ recent Bulletstorm utilised the system.
With Crysis 2, though, developer Crytek chose not to use Online Pass for two reasons. Firstly, when Online Pass was offered to Crytek the system was still in its infancy. Secondly, Crytek wanted to make the best first impression possible to console gamers and didn’t want to prevent any Crysis 2 gamers from taking part in the game’s multiplayer.
Crysis 2 is scheduled for release on March 25 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Given the negativity shown towards EA Online Pass and similar systems, Crytek’s decision to ship the game without any such restrictions should earn it some goodwill amongst the hardcore gaming crowd it needs to attract if the game is to succeed.
