DICE’s Battlefield 3 has burst onto the scene with a hugely impressive gameplay demonstration which highlights the benefits of its new Frostbite 2.0 game engine.

So good is the early footage of EA’s sequel that some are calling for Activision to invest in a new engine for Call of Duty. However, it’s a move Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling says won’t be happening.

“That would be counter productive,” Tweeted Bowling. “An engine takes years and years to develop and get right.”

Activision is yet to reveal details of this year’s Call of Duty title, although rumours suggest it will be a co-development between Modern Warfare studio Infinity Ward and Activision stable mate Sledgehammer.

We don’t see the Call of Duty franchise being given an engine upgrade until the next-generation of consoles is introduced.
