Two players of No Man’s Sky managed to arrange to meet up on the same planet only to discover that they couldn’t see each other, indicating there is no player-to-player interaction in the game.

“I warped for the first time today,” wrote Redditor TheGalacticCactus. “The Star system I landed in was discovered by a user named Psytokat… so I messaged him asking him to meet me at a space station. We are currently 4 systems away! We will meet at a space station.”

However, despite the best efforts from both players, they couldn’t see each other.

“We are 100 per cent In the same station same spot and everything and we cannot see each other,” TheGalacticCactus said in a disappointing update.

Onlookers have suggested server problems as the reason the players didn’t see each other. Overnight Hello Games’ Sean Murray indicated there were many players hammering the game’s servers.

“Everything is fine you guys. The servers are totally fine. Let’s just find our network engineer,” he Tweeted.

“There are way too many people playing right now. Maybe some of you can just log out? Decide amongst yourselves plz”

However, server issues aside, the idea that players could actually meet up in the game has never really been clear cut.

In October Murray told Stephen Colbert that the only way to know what you look like in game is for “somebody else to see you.” Colbert asked is you could run into other players in game, to which Murray said “yes, but the chances of that are incredibly rare because of the size of what we’re building”.

Perhaps not that rare given two players have already been in the exact same spot.

Only yesterday Murray seemed to be playing down the game’s online element.

“To be super clear – No Man’s Sky is not a multiplayer game. Please don’t go in looking for that experience,” Murray said.

“The chances of two players ever crossing paths in a universe this large is pretty much zero.”

“We do have some online features and easter eggs so people can know they are playing in the same universe. It’s about cool ‘moments’,” he said.

Murray has this morning responded, stating that discovering other players is something the game encourages, but what about actually seeing them?

“Two players finding each other on a stream in the first day – that has blown my mind,” he Tweeted.

“We added a ‘scan for other players’ in the Galactic Map to try to encourage this happening. We wanted it to happen – but the first day?

“We want people to be aware they are in a shared universe. We added online features, and some Easter Eggs to create cool moments.

“We hope to see those happening… but too many of you are playing right now. More than we could have predicted.

“It is a testament to how amazing our network coders are that Discoveries are still working at all.”

TheGalacticCactus isn’t letting the disappointment ruin the fun.

“Thank you to all the people who tuned in to my stream you really made my week! I was so nervous when I found another player I was barely able to function but we did it! Me and Psytokat beat the odds and found each other already!” he said, though to be clear they didn’t actually see each other.

“I will try again soon to see if we can try again when the servers are more stable. Stay tuned!”
