The upcoming update for No Man’s Sky, called The Abyss, takes players down into the depths and lets them explore the ocean.

In a press release, Hello Games co-founder Sean Murray said, ‘We wanted to focus on improving underwater, and also on some of the eerier elements of the game for Halloween. Oceans were always vast in size in No Man’s Sky, but are now a huge, deep part of our gameplay.’

The Abyss isn’t quite as huge an update as Next was – which made changes to fundamental systems in the game and added multiplayer – but it does add undersea missions and vehicles.

As the trailer shows, there will be 'more frequent, and more interesting' underwater creatures, along with Rapture-esque underwater bases.

On top of that, The Abyss also adds The Dreams of the Deep, a new series of missions that tell 'a dark story about a stranded freighter crew.' It sounds suitably spooky.

At the end of the trailer, the narrator describes The Abyss as 'another step on a long journey,' before promising that 'more will follow.'
