Command & Conquer 4 is set to be the latest PC title sure to ruffle the feathers of the PC hardcore; lead designer Sam Bass has confirmed the title will ship without support for LAN play and dedicated multiplayer servers.

C&C4 has been created around the idea of global player progression, a system which requires players to be online at all times. This progression system is active across single-player, multiplayer and skirmish, with all the information stored in one of EA’s servers. It’s for this reason, says Bass, that the game won’t offer some of the PC gaming staples.

“It all lives on a server so you can’t really do dedicated servers with that,” he explained.

The upside to all this is the ability to access your game from wherever you wish simply by logging into the game.

Command & Conquer 4 is scheduled for release on March 19, 2010.
