Nintendo has issued a warning on its website against the installation of mod chips in Nintendo hardware. After a brief intro outlining what a mod chip is, the article on the official Nintendo Europe website goes on to explain what nasty side-effects installing a mod chip could have.
“The use of mod chips voids the manufacturer’s warranty. In addition, the installation of a mod chip can damage the functionality of a Nintendo console, sometimes rendering it incapable of repair,” warns the article. “Mod chips have been adjudicated to be illegal in various countries around the world, including the Unites States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. Most European countries have also already adopted laws prohibiting the circumvention of technological measures for copyright protection.“
As a final warning the article states: “People caught installing or selling mod chips may be subject to criminal charges.“
Chipping Nintendo’s latest hardware, the Wii, has been largely carried out to bypass the region locking found in the console, making it possible to play games from all regions. Many avid importers will argue that chipping would be a non-issue had Nintendo made the console open to play software from all regions.
