Today sees the release of the fourth annual Develop 100, which ranks the world’s games development studios according to the sales of their games at UK retail.

In a change to previous form, Nintendo claims the top spot, kicking EA – the winner in the three previous years – down to No.2. Nintendo releases, which included Brain Training and Super Mario Galaxy, generated £129.83 million in revenue – a 200% increase year-on-year.

The Develop 100 also shows European development studios to be in good health, claiming 36 of the 100 places and accounting for £284 million at UK retail in 2007. Canada’s 12 development studios generated £221 million in revenue.

“While the success of the Wii and DS has helped a number of Japanese firms triumph, it’s good to also see developers in the UK and mainland Europe punching above their weight to claim a huge chunk of the credit for some of last year’s best-selling games,” commented Develop editor Michael French..

You can find the full Develop 100 list over on develop100.com, which includes Ubisoft Montreal at No.3, Infinity Ward at No.5, Bungie at No.8, Traveller’s Tales at No.10 and Capcom at No.15. You have to go all the way to No.45 to find Epic Games and No.47 for World of Warcraft developer Blizzard.
